This Saturday the Australian public will vote in the referendum on enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and Government in the Constitution.
This is an important moment in history, and a rare opportunity to directly decide on a critical change for our country.
A ‘yes’ vote is the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution and the provision of a Voice, giving a permanent vehicle to advise on matters that affect them. The Voice was requested in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and is supported by over 80% of Indigenous people.
We believe the referendum is a matter of public principle, not private opinion. For this reason AURIN fully supports the ‘yes’ vote.
Over the last few months a lot of fear and misinformation has been spread over the Voice. There are a number of great resources available that explain what the referendum is and why it’s important.
Among them, the ABC has a podcast with short and easy to understand episodes. The University of Melbourne has a range of videos and articles on their Voice website. And if you only have a few minutes, rapper and Yorta Yorta man Briggs can clearly and concisely explain it to you.
