AURIN will join Australia’s data community at the International Data Week 2025, taking place in Brisbane next week.
Organised by the Committee on Data (CODATA) and the World Data System (WDS) of the International Science Council (ISC), and the Research Data Alliance (RDA) and hosted by The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC), International Data Week (IDW) is the leading global forum for exploring how data can drive change by empowering communities and advancing research.
The theme for 2025, “Data for Positive Change” reflects the growing focus on using data responsibly to empower communities and improve decision making. This aligns strongly with our purpose as Australia’s national urban digital research infrastructure and the extensive program covers our key research challenges of climate adaptation, energy transition, housing, and demographic change.
Our participation in IDW 2025 highlights AURIN’s role in advancing the National Urban Policy and the National Science and Research Priorities, while strengthening Australia’s contribution to global data initiatives.

AURIN at SciDataCon 2025

Coordinating National Data Infrastructures to Support Global Research
Poster: The Information Standards Advisory Panel (ISAP) of the National Earth and Environmental Sciences Facilities Forum (NEESFF)

AURIN will exhibit alongside fellow NCRIS facilities in a poster session on Infrastructures to Support Data-Intensive Research.
The poster will outline how NCRIS partners are working together to create a national data ecosystem that connects research infrastructures across the Earth and environmental sciences. By coordinating standards, governance, and interoperability frameworks, ISAP is supporting Australia’s capacity to participate in global data networks and advance open science.
Legal and Organisational Aspects of Data Interoperability for Climate Adaptation
Session: Open Research through Interconnected, Interoperable, and Interdisciplinary Data

Dr Pascal Perez will contribute to a session examining the legal and organisational challenges of data interoperability in cross-disciplinary climate adaptation research.
This discussion is part of an international collaboration exploring frameworks to address privacy, intellectual property, and compliance issues that often limit the sharing of critical data. Drawing on the EU-funded Climate-Adapt4EOSC project, the session will present case studies on urban climate vulnerability, coastal hazard resilience, and soil stability.
Pascal will share insights from AURIN’s experience developing and maintaining a trusted national data infrastructure that balances openness with compliance and ethical governance. The session aims to establish practical pathways for interoperable data exchange between research, government, and operational settings, an essential step in enabling data-driven climate resilience.
Building Data Platforms to Reduce Inequities

Our Urban Health Domain Expert, Dr Aiden Price, will join a panel on building data platforms that address health and environmental inequities. This session will showcase a range of low-cost and advanced digital platforms designed to turn complex data into actionable insights for decision makers.
Aiden will discuss approaches to developing interactive health and environmental data tools that make data more accessible and usable for communities and policymakers. These examples illustrate how well-designed data platforms can improve the communication of evidence, support equity-focused decisions, and strengthen trust in public data systems.
AURIN is a part of the National Earth and Environmental Science Facilities Forum (NEESFF), a collection of NCRIS and other organisations that works to harness the capacity of its environmentally focused capabilities to collectively create solutions and deliver the information needed for sustainable development and use of environmental resources.
NEESFF’s vision is an effective and coordinated response to global environmental conditions in a uniquely Australian context. Our environment is changing at unprecedented rates as human populations rely on environmental assets within the framework of rapid climate change and population growth. These multiple and cumulative pressures make it more important than ever to study and understand the status and trends of our environment in an ecologically responsible and cost-effective way.

Session: Birds of a Feather (BoF): Balancing ethical considerations and Open Science principles when sharing community relevant data

High quality data are required to provide the best possible grounds for evidence-based decision making.
The aim of this session is to compare sector-specific challenges, identify common problems, highlight specificities, pinpoint best practices and create recommendations for sharing community relevant data. We are particularly interested in the status of shared stewardship, and how alignment with relevant legislation is accomplished unless making the data openly accessible is against the legitimate interest of the research or the personal data protection principles commonly summed up with the phrase ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’.
