We’re excited to announce the new members to AURIN’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC). The SAC brings together renowned experts across the urban and social science fields. The SAC will advise AURIN on strategic priorities and opportunities to enhance AURIN’s research infrastructure and facilitate cutting-edge research.

The expertise of the SAC will play a crucial role in shaping the development of AURIN. Their knowledge will allow AURIN to better support urban and social scientists throughout Australia, ushering in a new era for the organisation and empowering communities to tackle future challenges.

Our new SAC member bring a wealth of experience from academia, government, and the NFP sector, which ensures a diverse range of perspectives.

The new members of the SAC are:

  • Sharon Biermann (UWA, Director, PATREC; Professor of Transport Research)
  • Lisa Bush (Geoscience Australia, Head, NLI Branch)
  • Isabel Ceron (ASSA, Project Lead, Decadal Plan 2023-32; Senior policy analyst)
  • Shaun Copley (ABS, Assistant Director, Geospatial Solutions; Assistant Director, Australian Climate Service (sec.))
  • Jonathan Corcoran (UQ, Deputy Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Science and Fellow, Academy of the Social Sciences Australia)
  • Matt Duckham (RMIT, Director, Information in Society EIP; Professor, Geospatial Science)
  • Chris Pettit (UNSW, Director, City Futures Research Centre; Professor of Urban Science)
  • Ellie Torabi (DITRDCA, Director, Research and Evaluation; Cities and Suburbs Unit)
  • Marie Truelove (CSIRO Data61, Head of Product Management; Leader, Terria Digital Twin product strategy)

Their responsibilities include:

  • Making recommendations on data sets, services, and technologies that AURIN should support in the future;
  • Advising on the strategic delivery and prioritization of new research themes and potential collaborative projects;
  • Championing strong engagement between AURIN and the urban and social science community in order that it delivers an excellent infrastructure capability and service.

‘Digital futures have never been more important to research and innovation than today,’ said Professor Matt Duckham. ‘And cities have never been more important to the future of our society, in Australia and globally. This puts AURIN at the epicentre of the coming wave of digital research infrastructure, innovation and impact.’

‘I am a huge fan,’ said Dr Isabel Ceron. ‘Besides its well-known geospatial capabilities, AURIN has pioneered models to bring the use of advanced research analytics down to real government and industry settings, through user-friendly, research-grade tools and platforms. It’s tremendous—modern research toolcrafting in the service of transdisciplinary research. We need more of that.’

We’re so grateful for the significant contributions the inaugural Scientific Advisory Committee made to AURIN over the past three years. We look forward to working with our new SAC in the coming months and years.
