The AURIN Management Board plays a crucial role in setting strategic objectives and ensures AURIN fulfils its commitments and obligations as a NCRIS funded project.
Dr Chris Pigram
Chair, AURIN
Dr Pigram is a geologist with over 40 years of experience in a wide range of geoscientific research and mapping. He is a leader in the research and management of minerals, marine and petroleum geoscience programs, and geospatial and earth monitoring.
He has extensive experience in managing the interface between science and government in stakeholder engagement. He was made a member of the order of Australia in 2019.
Prof. Pascal Perez
Director, AURIN
Prof. Perez is a specialist of integrative infrastructure modelling and socio-technological transitions. He is a Fellow of the Modelling and Simulation Society of Australia and New Zealand, and of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
He is a member of the Executive Council of IOT Alliance Australia and the International Advisory Board of UK’s Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities.
Prof. Mark Stevenson
Board member
Mark Stevenson is an epidemiologist and Professor of Urban Transport and Public Health at the University of Melbourne, an appointment across the Melbourne Schools of Design, Engineering and Population and Global Health.
He is a National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia) Research Fellow, an Honorary Professor in the Peking University Health Science Centre, China, and an advisor for injury to the Director General of the World Health Organisation. He is the director of the Transport, Health and Urban Design research lab.
Lesley Arnold
Board member
Lesley Arnold is director of Geospatial Frameworks and an independent consultant working with governments to develop strategies, policies, and implementation plans for spatial information reform, open data initiatives, spatial innovation, and the future geospatial information ecosystem.
Lesley works with the United Nations (UN) and World Bank supporting countries to strengthen their geospatial information management capabilities towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals. She is a board director of AuScope, Adjunct at Curtin University, and chair of the Surveying and Spatial Science Institute (SSSI) Disaster Management and Recovery Special Interest Group.
Austin Ley
Board member
Austin Ley is Manager Investment at Moira Shire Council. Previously he was the council’s Manager Economic Development, and was Manager Research and Knowledge for the City of Melbourne for twenty years, helping to develop Melbourne and position it as a knowledge city.
He has also worked across urban planning, economic policy and research for JLW Advisory Vic, Wilson Sayer Core, the Ministry for Planning and Environment and the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works.
Peter Francis
Board member
Peter is one of Australia’s pre-eminent lawyers on technology commercialisation and has extensive experience working for research organisations and technology developers. He established FAL Lawyers, a commercial law firm recognised as the leading legal experts in research and technology commercialisation. Peter supports innovation and has worked with a diverse array of organisations to turn life-changing ideas into a commercial reality.
Prof. Jodie Smith
Board member
Jodie is currently the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and the Antarctic Branch Head at Geoscience Australia. She has a strong record leading strategic science programs in support of Australia’s national interests. Jodie works across the science-policy-law interface and has experience representing the Australian Government in national and international forums. She is also a passionate advocate for women and girls in STEM.

IAN OPPERMANN
Board member
Dr Oppermann brings a wealth of experience in data science, technology, and innovation to his new role on our Board. He is the co-founder of ServiceGen and an Industry Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He serves on the boards of multiple deep technology start-ups and chairs the Commonwealth’s Data Standards Committee. Additionally, he is an Advisor to the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. From 2015 to 2023, Dr Oppermann held the position of NSW Government’s inaugural Chief Data Scientist and was the founding CEO of the NSW Data Analytics Centre (DAC).
