Beta5 has seen many of the popular AURIN tools improved to take in larger datasets and increased processing power.
A great example of this is the AURIN Walkability Tool, which is now robust enough to build 1500 metre pedestrian walkability catchments for each of Melbourne’s 270 train stations, using a road network of Metropolitan Melbourne containing almost 300,000 features! This impressive analysis can now be completed on many of the major cities in Australia using the appropriate input datasets from AURIN.
A walkable catchment, sometimes called a ‘PedShed’, is an area mapped within a five to ten minute walk of a neighbourhood destination. It is a tool that compares the ease for a pedestrian to move around an urban area to get to needed centres and facilities: the closer the walk to these centres, the more energy efficient the urban area.
Physical inactivity is the fourth leading contributor to disease globally and increasing physical activity is a priority, both within Australia and internationally – identifying factors that facilitate activity is essential. One approach is through the design of urban environments that promote walking whilst also providing a range of co-benefits including increased social interaction, sustainability and environmental protection.
