Code for Australia are kicking off BudgetHack 2017: Communicating the budget on the 3rd of May at Thoughtworks in Melbourne.
AURIN is providing access to the AURIN API for attendees to use for spatial data access.
What is BudgetHack 2017?
The Victorian State Budget sets out the government’s expenditure and programs priorities for the year but what do the numbers really mean to an everyday Victorian citizen?
This community event is for developers, researchers, practitioners, and anyone else who’s interested to come together and explore different ways to present and make sense of the state budget. You don’t need technical skills to get involved with BudgetHack.
To better understand and communicate the implications of the 2017/2018 Victorian Budget some things we might consider are:
- Where, the budget has been distributed across the state and what for?
- How will the budget benefit individuals, the localities that they live and work in, and the public services available to citizens across the state?
- How does the budget provide for people who are vulnerable or disadvantaged?
What types of data is available?
Data.vic.gov.au will release more than 50 data sets from the budget and location data will be released for this event. These include many Technical budget datasets including Parliament financial statements, Taxation Revenue, Payroll tax etc. Mapping and spatial data is also being released.
What is AURIN providing?
AURIN has cleaned and prepared the Mapping and spatial data and made this available through the AURIN OpenAPI. Also available to all hackers is the AURIN Map with open data from national data providers, all spatialised and available for visualisation or download. Both the AURIN OpenAPI and AURIN Map can connected to QGIS for downloading and analysis of open data.
A programmatic link to this spatialised data will be made available for attendees to connect to their GIS systems. The API supplies open data licensed as CC-BY with permission from the data custodians. For access to the API and tutorials on how to use it, click here. |
Free and open AURINMap with national data layers from various data partners covering subjects such as population and demographics, health and wellbeing, socio-economic indices, vulnerability indicators and access to services. Data is generously shared by AURIN’s data partners and visualised by AURIN Data team. |
